If it ain’t broke… Don’t fix it!
Sound familiar?
Change can be challenging for all of us. Just the thought of change can get our heart racing and palms sweating.
That’s because when something doesn’t feel familiar our defenses go up.
You see, whether we’re conscious of it or not, familiarity actually calms us. So even if we WANT to make a change, deep down we actually want things to stay the same.
And let’s face it, most of us don’t like surprises!
But here’s the thing! As humans, we’re created for change!
We know that because growth and change are synonymous and we’re created for growth!
Yet, it often feels like a game of tug-of-war. Avoiding change yet understanding that growth is necessary for us to evolve.
If you think about it, we’re taught from a young age to avoid change as much as possible. Then as we get older, we’re questioned by others about why we’re always changing.
It can feel like a struggle… IF we let it.
Recently I was working with Geoff, a client who was asking to create something really big in his life. He had a clear vision for what he wanted but was stuck on what steps to take to achieve that dream. As part of The Congruent Method, I introduced him to the benefits of creating with mindset growth and the laws of attraction.
A growth mindset means that you don’t see change as failure, a way to describe yourself, but as a springboard for growth and developing your abilities.
Geoff’s story
As soon as Geoff put those new tools into action, he upleveled his belief in himself, his vision or his creations and people started contacting him about his inventions.
The energies of creation were starting to shift from within.
And the a funny thing happened.
As he got closer to achieving his dream, the more wary he became.
Geoff started worrying that he wouldn’t have the right answers. Or he wouldn’t be presenting himself and his ideas properly.
That fear of change was seeping in. He started to put his ideas, thoughts, and dreams aside.
As we dug into where that belief came from, he began to recognize that his fears stemmed from being raised in a family where they expected him to be perfect.
The truth is, there’s no such thing as perfect.
So many of us face memories, thoughts and emotions from our childhood that shape us into adulthood. If we’re raised in a family in which they’re extremely critical of everything we do and be… that it’s never good enough, we bring that with us too.
Those negative comments and thoughts instilled through childhood develop into limiting beliefs that can stunt our growth as we grow through life.
Geoff was using that as a reason to justify stopping himself just when he was at the edge of creating greater.
He had convinced himself that no matter what, he wouldn’t be good enough… won’t make the grade… or wouldn’t be able to please anyone.
Working together, Geoff soon had that golden light bulb moment. He realised that although he’d been asking for more, he was processing it as if he was still a child.
That’s why we need to ask ourselves – who does that belief come from? Who do those emotions belong to?
As we worked through that process, he discovered that there was a different way to be with this. That he needed to embrace the change and growth
Juicy tips
Here’s a few of those same juicy tips that Geoff used, that can help you go from being fearful – to fearless of change. See more in this week’s Mindset Moment video.
Ask yourself these important questions. What do you truly want to create and why do you want it? For you – or someone else? Be clear about what you want.
Setting up a morning routine for yourself. That can include meditation, visualization, or yoga! Whatever helps clear your mind and connects you to the present.
Be intentional with your thoughts and actions… and run with it! Don’t wait! Procrastination can be the destructor of growth.
Focus on the big picture. Don’t get swept up in the day-to-day stresses of life. We can easily start using other distractions as an excuse to stop moving forward.
As Geoff discovered, mindset growth is a delicious reward for change and creating the life he’d always dreamed of.
Imagine how incredible you would feel, embracing, encouraging – and yes, even enjoying the process.
“Change can be scary, but you know what’s scarier? Allowing fear to stop you from growing, evolving and progressing.”
