Asking questions isn’t always about looking for answers

Mar 29, 2023

Asking questions isn’t always about looking for answers.

Remember growing up, always having to answer questions, like did you do your homework? What do you want? Why did you do that?

You’ve been taught, from a young age, by your parents and teachers to always give answers.

One of the fundamental tools in The Congruent Method is living in and asking the question. Not giving the answers.

You see my friend, when you’re asking the questions, it means you’re willing to be present and in the energies of being the question. It encourages you to embrace the awareness, feel the uncertainty, and being willing to take risks, knowing you have choices.

It’s being in the energies of wonder and curiosity.

And when you’re open to that, everything becomes possible. Because we live in an abundant Universe, anything you desire to create, and change is there for you.

If you focus your energies on searching for the answers, you miss out on all the other possibilities. All the delicious adventures, curiosity, and awareness.

The truth is an answer disempowers.

Think about that for a moment. When someone gives you an answer, you’re giving up your own awareness and letting them influence your energetic sphere. You lose the opportunity to discover what is to be true for you.

Here’s the beauty about asking questions. It’s not about looking for an answer, but rather opening the door to juicy possibilities. It creates more awareness, encouraging you to trust your own intuition and wisdom. To forge and follow your own unique path.

I like to encourage my clients to ask questions from the fresh energies and wonderment of a child.  Think back to when you were very young. Exploring, drawing, creating, imagining. Wondering what the world was all about.

If you approached your life constantly searching for the answers, you may have felt disheartened. Like you didn’t fit in, or that something was missing, all because you weren’t able to find the right answer.

When I was doing my masters in painting, I discovered the beautiful book, Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke. It truly opened my eyes and heart to a life that I always knew was possible. He talks about living in the question. This quote says it perfectly:

“Don’t search for the answers, they cannot be given to you now because you would not be able to live them.”

How true is that?

It puts you in the present energy of wondering what else is possible and is here for me, that I haven’t been willing to be or see.  In this reality where we’re so driven to solve, discover, and become, it’s a lovely reminder of what truly is.

My quest has always been to be my best self. To ask, what’s my next best step? What would this taste like? Feel like? To learn and share whatever I’m discovering? Rilke’s observation is so clear and gentle, that sometimes the knowing will just present itself – as long as you’re willing to be in the question of your life.

He goes on to say, “Perhaps someday far in the future, you’ll gradually, even without noticing it, live your way into the answer”. I love that! Living your way into the answer. Take whatever comes with great trust.

When you live in the question, that’s what drives you to continue the adventure of discovering so much more. Exploring different places and spaces. Going to different schools and trying different careers.

Ask yourself the questions. What would this taste like? Feel like? What’s over here… or over there?

Here are a few actions you can take if you want to start playing with living in the question of your life.

  •         Practice curiosity and authenticity
  •         Remain open to new possibilities
  •         Be willing to ask questions
  •         Be curious
  •         Be uncomfortable with, and embrace uncertainty
  •         Be flexible and willing to adapt and make changes
  •         Trust your intuition

If you were given all the answers, it would likely end that delicious curious energy that makes life exciting.

“Your preparation for the real world is not in the answers you’ve learned, but in the questions you’ve learned how to ask yourself.”

–  Rainer Maria Rilke
