Creating a Joy-Filled Life: What Are You Willing to Commit To?

Jun 13, 2024

This month, we’re exploring the theme of “Falling in Love with Your Life.” Today’s topic is particularly close to my heart: “What are you willing to commit to in creating a joy-filled life?” It’s an essential question because creating a joyful life isn’t something that happens—it takes intention and action. Let’s explore this together.

What Does Committing to a Joy-Filled Life Mean?

First off, let’s talk about what committing to a joy-filled life really means and what it can create for you. When you make a commitment to joy, you’re deciding to prioritize your happiness. It’s about figuring out what brings you joy and consciously trying to bring more of those things into your life. This commitment creates a positive ripple effect, impacting your well-being, relationships, and work.
Think about it—when you focus on joy, you generate positive energy that aligns with what you want to create. This helps you stay focused on what truly matters, making it easier to handle life’s ups and downs with a positive outlook.

Identifying Your Sources of Joy

To start, it’s crucial to identify your sources of joy. What truly makes you happy? Is it spending time with loved ones, engaging in a hobby, or simply enjoying nature? Take a moment to think about the times you felt truly joyful and fulfilled.

Here’s a little exercise: Close your eyes for a minute and think about a recent moment when you felt really happy. What were you doing? Who were you with? How did it make you feel? Jot down these thoughts in a journal. This will help you recognize patterns and understand what brings you the most joy.

Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature brings immense joy to me. Whether hiking in the mountains or taking a walk in the park, these activities rejuvenate my spirit and bring me peace.

Making Time for Joyful Activities
Next, committing to making time for these joyful activities is crucial. Life gets busy, and it’s easy to neglect what makes us happy. So, schedule these activities for your week, just like any other necessary appointment.
Think of it as prioritizing your well-being. If reading a good book, gardening, or practicing a hobby brings you joy, carve out time in your calendar for these activities. This intentional planning ensures you’re consistently making space for joy in your life.

Embracing Positive Habits
Another key aspect is embracing positive habits that contribute to your overall happiness. This could include regular exercise, healthy eating, mindfulness practices, and getting enough sleep. These habits are the foundation of a joy-filled life.
For instance, starting your day with a few minutes of meditation or a morning walk can set a positive tone. These small habits can significantly impact your overall sense of joy and well-being when practiced consistently.

Avoiding the Trap of One Source of Joy
It’s also essential to avoid putting all your eggs in one basket. We often think joy comes from one thing—if only I got that promotion or had that relationship, I’d be happy. But the truth is, you’ve got to create a life with multiple sources of joy. Part of that is acknowledging what you’ve committed to in the past that you might be taking for granted right now.
In asking this question, I realize we all fall into the trap of believing, “If only… then I would be…” However, true joy comes from various experiences and relationships that create a fulfilling life.

The Consequences of Not Committing
Let’s talk about the traps we fall into when we’re not committed to creating a joy-filled life. When we don’t commit, we often get stuck in cycles of dissatisfaction. We rely on external factors to bring us happiness and feel constantly unfulfilled because we haven’t taken ownership of our joy.
This lack of commitment can make us feel powerless. We might find ourselves waiting for the perfect moment or situation to be happy instead of actively creating joy. This mindset keeps us from experiencing true happiness and fulfillment.

Starting Your Day with “How Am I?”
Let’s start our day with a powerful exercise we’re covering in the Congruent Living Academy. Instead of asking, “Who am I?” ask yourself, “How am I?”. This simple shift focuses on acknowledging your feelings and recognizing that you can shift towards what brings you joy.
Each morning, take a moment to check in with yourself. Ask, “How am I?” This will help you become aware of your current state and give you the opportunity to consciously decide to shift towards joy. It’s about recognizing your feelings and understanding that you can change your experience.

Overcoming Obstacles to Joy
Of course, creating a joy-filled life also means committing to overcoming obstacles that might stand in your way. This could be negative thinking, toxic relationships, or unhealthy habits. Identifying and addressing these obstacles is essential to creating a life that brings you joy.
Start by acknowledging what’s holding you back. Then, create a plan to address these challenges. This might involve setting boundaries, seeking support from loved ones, or making lifestyle changes.

Expressing Gratitude and Acknowledging Your Efforts
Lastly, it’s important to express gratitude and acknowledge your efforts to create a life you love. Appreciate the small steps you’re taking and celebrate your progress, no matter how minor it might seem.
Take a moment each day to acknowledge what you’ve done to bring more joy into your life. Whether it’s as simple as spending a few minutes in the sun or as significant as making a major life change, every effort counts. Gratitude enhances your joy and reinforces your commitment to living a fulfilling life.

Journal Prompt for the Week
Here’s your journal prompt for this week: Reflect on the various sources of joy in your life. Write about the things you may take for granted and how you can appreciate them more. Also, consider how you can diversify your sources of joy rather than relying on just one.
